June
Photographs by Stephanie J. Shank
As a photographer, I am fascinated with people, what they cherish throughout their lives, and the tangible remnants left behind when one leaves a place or passes away. Tangible remnants of life – clothing, photographs, books, personal belongings – can be pieced together to create a collective, surrogate portrait more moving than a traditional photograph of one’s visage.
As a young girl, my grandmother, June, seemed as if she reveled in another period in time, her home filled with storied treasures, her gardens continuously bursting with blooms, her creations beside her chair all while the delightful smells of cakes baking filled her home. Hazy at times, as I focus on the most meaningful details, each still memory shares a story through her belongings; the belongings that tie our family together as a whole.
June, a surrogate portrait of my grandmother’s domestic life; rich with tradition, southern craft, and feminine daily ritual is an exploration of her life while attempting to preserve part of my own history.
